Blackfoot River Rafting in Montana

BYU2005081.jpg The Blackfoot River starts in the Bob Marshall Wilderness and gathers volume from many small streams. By the time it reaches the town of Ovando the river has become great for canoeing. The whitewater portion starts at Russell Gates and is more than 45 miles long with numerous possibilities for different floats. During May and June, high water season, the Blackfoot is a good class II+ river with long stretches of rapids, fast water and several feisty holes and wave trains. By mid June when the levels start to come down the Blackfoot is a premier scenic float. The scenery is outstanding and wildlife abundant. Birding is incredible with numerous northwest species all spring.

The Blackfoot River is steeped in history. It was the waterway for taking the Blackfeet Indians to the Buffalo hunts. The river valley was Meriwether Lewis’s favorite, and provided excitement and drama at the end of this challenging exploration. The Blackfoot then played a major role in the Montana timber history and had a railroad at one time. The Blackfoot River then changed its role and excelled in providing recreational opportunities.

The Blackfoot River Challenge:

Request a BrochurePresently the Blackfoot River has been the focus for developing a landmark usage program between those that use the river, those that own land around the river, and the agencies involved in river management. In one of the largest conservation land deals in Montana history, nearly 41,000 acres in the forested lands surrounding the river valley will now be protected thanks to an agreement between The Nature Conservancy and Plum Creek Timber. The deal to be completed over five years will involve the purchase and re-sale, with conservation restrictions, of 88,000 acres of lands to private and public buyers. This historic purchase will help to protect the Blackfoot River Valley for future generations and preserve the rural ranching character of the valley.
